No Matter How Many Different Names Culture Vultures Give to Pan, A Pan is Still a Pan

Author: Rudy Kendall

To date, the steelpan instrument as we know it has undergone full scale neo-colonization, where much proof of this fact lies in the numerous different names that have been coined for the instrument. The Pan has turned into everything but a Pan according to the colonizers, who have re-named the instrument everything from ''Bells'' to ''Harps''. Without a doubt, this ever constant flow of new names being attributed to the same old instrument is part of the tried and proven ''divide and conquer'' colonization tactic that has been used by Europeans throughout history in order to carve up the continents...

Author: Rudy Kendall

The steelpan has become huge force in Caribbean culture due in large part to the many calypsonians of Trinidad who have made the steelpan and the sub-culture surrounding it the topic of some of their legendary records. Therefore, it is quite obvious that busking, despite its humble, stigmatized nature as a profession or way of life, is not an area of human activity that is exempt from racism by any means. As such,...

The Handpan Mafia

As a veteran steelpan enthusiast (23 years), it is disheartening to say the least, that there is apparently a Handpan Mafia in existence which collectively, whether willfully or not, has conspired to remove the handpan from the traditional steelpan family of which it is a descendant. In the process, they have essentially on the whole, emerged from out of the shadows and have now basically cornered the handpan market. They simultaneously charge exorbitant, over-inflated prices for instruments which only maintain their over-inflated valuation due to an essentially uninformed, easily led, and non-musically oriented buyers market.  Allow me to expand.  The...
